Outbreak of E. Coli Linked To Romaine Lettuce ‘Appears To Be Over

The cases in the United States are the same strain as the cases in Canada, and some of them have the same genetic fingerprint. "We should be able to reintroduce romaine lettuce back into our restaurants soon".

Jean Halloran, director of Food Policy Initiatives at Consumers Union, said it's unclear what steps FDA and CDC are taking in the wake of one of the most serious outbreaks that has occurred in the Trump administration.

American officials said that the outbreak was most likely caused by "leafy greens", while their counterparts in Canada specifically identified romaine lettuce as the source of the infections there. "I continue to be deeply alarmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) response to the recent multistate outbreak of E. coli". Nine of those people have been hospitalized, two of whom are suffering from a form of kidney failure.

With the investigation ongoing the CDC is not recommending people avoid any particular food at this time.

In her letter, the Democrat asked CDC to clarify the coordination between Canada and the USA health authorities on the outbreak, and report any information CDC may have on "implicated suppliers, distributors or retailers".

Produce trade organizations issued a statement that, as of last week, no public health agency had contacted romaine lettuce growers or processors and asked to stop shipping product. The CDC said the likely source of the USA outbreak appears to be leafy greens, but it is not recommending Americans avoid any particular food at this time. Canada identified romaine lettuce as the source of illnesses there, but the source of the romaine lettuce or where it became contaminated is unknown.

Although the most recent illness started on December 12, there is a delay between when someone gets sick and when the illness is reported to CDC. "For instance, if the equipment at a processing plant is contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, new product could become a source of further infections".

The Public Health Agency of Canada identified romaine lettuce as the source of the outbreak in Canada. People usually get sick from E. coli O157:H7 three to four days after eating food contaminated with the germ. There is 1 reported death.

To help prevent E. coli infection, wash your hands thoroughly before and after preparing and eating food. "You can't taste, smell or see E. coli, which is what makes it so risky". It's also important to avoid preparing food when you are sick, particularly if you are sick with diarrhea.

For the record, symptoms of E. coli begin two to eight days after consuming the bacteria, notes CNN.

"In collaboration with our association colleagues we'd like to share the following update to last week's communications regarding the E. coli O157:H7 foodborne illness outbreak that has impacted many (of our) members", the produce groups' release said.
