NATION-NOW Ex Google engineer Damore sues alleging discrimination against white conservative men
Former Google engineer sues for discrimination
Damore said in a lawsuitfiled in Superior Court in Santa Clara County that he was harassed and threatened by other Googlers and fired for "perpetuating gender stereotypes".
In a lengthy memo that went viral in August, Damore had argued against Google's "echo chamber" of liberal ideas. "Google's management goes to extreme - and illegal - lengths to encourage hiring managers to take protected categories such as race and/or gender into consideration as determinative hiring factors, to the detriment of Caucasian and male employees and potential employees at Google".
The search engine giant is also now being sued by three women who used to work at Google, alleging it pays women less than men for comparable work. Both men say they were "ostracized, belittled and punished for their heterodox political views, and for the added sin of their birth circumstances of being Caucasians and/or males". It is seeking class action status for three groups of people who it claims have been similarly discriminated against: Conservatives, Caucasians, and men. Those violations include wrongful termination, workplace harassment, workplace discrimination, retaliation failure to prevent harassment, discrimination and retaliation, and unfair business practices, amongst others.
Damore, a former Google engineer who was sacked in August after posting a memo to an internal Google message board suggesting that biological differences between men and women "might explain why we don't see equal representation of women in tech and leadership", is joined in the suit by another former Google engineer David Gudeman.
Some legal experts have said Damore faces an uphill battle suing Google.
The lawsuit requested an injunction barring Google from discriminating against individuals with conservative political views, as well as for unspecified compensation.
It accuses the company of failing to protect employees with conservative views, including supporting US President Donald Trump. The suit alleges that Google's diversity efforts are unlawful, citing "illegal hiring quotas to fill its desired percentages of women and favored minority candidates" as an example. The duo claims that Google discriminates against white male conservatives.
The suit claims Google maintains a blacklist of conservatives media personalities not allowed on company grounds: It allegedly includes radio host Alex Jones and conservative blogger Curtis Yarvin.
