And Miller says it's "tragic and unfortunate" that former Trump strategist Steve Bannon, who's quoted at length in the book, would make what Miller calls "grotesque comments" that are out of step with reality.

Bannon infuriated Trump with comments to author Michael Wolff describing a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower in NY between Donald Trump Jr., Trump campaign aides and a Russian lawyer as "treasonous" and "unpatriotic".

"I regret that my delay in responding to the inaccurate reporting regarding Don Jr. has diverted attention from the president's historical accomplishments in the first year of his presidency", Bannon concluded. 'I think that would qualify as not smart, but genius....and a very stable genius at that!' "My family and I have not communicated with Steve Bannon in many months and have provided no financial support to his political agenda, nor do we support his recent actions and statements", Mercer told the Washington Post.

During a visit to Camp David Saturday, President Donald Trump doubled down on his morning tweets in which he called himself "like, really smart" and "a very stable genius".

In the BBC interview broadcast Sunday, May reaffirmed that Trump would visit Britain.

Miller's interview on CNN's "State of the Union" quickly grew heated, with Miller criticizing CNN's coverage and moderator Jake Tapper pressing Miller to answer his questions.

Cotton joined the White House in pushing back on the claims made in the book. The book, which went on sale Friday, also paints the picture of a President who neither knows nor cares about policy and doesn't seem to perceive the vast responsibilities of his role. "Watch the hatred and unfairness of this CNN flunky!"

Fox said that Ms. Trump and Mr. Kushner's "seemingly preternatural ability to compartmentalize" has thickened their skins against the barbs aimed at them in Wolff's book. Now I have to put up with a Fake Book, written by a totally discredited author.

The White House has taken issue with the claims in Wolff's book since excerpts of it began to surface online ahead of its publication, with press secretary Sarah Sanders calling it "complete fantasy" and an attorney for Trump sending a "cease and desist" threat to the book's author and publisher.

"I guess "Sloppy Steve" [Bannon] brought him into the White House quite a bit", Trump said.

The book also quotes Bannon and other prominent advisers as questioning the president's competence. In October, Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) called the White House an "adult day care center" with a volatile president who could spark World War III.

"I went to the best colleges, or college", he told reporters.

Wolff's book depicts a deeply unprepared, incurious president surrounded by toadying advisers nonetheless concerned about his ability to do the job. "No one questions the stability of the president", Haley said.
