US President Donald Trump holds a Cabinet Meeting in the Cabinet Room at the White House in Washington DC on Wednesday

In an exceedingly tense interview Sunday morning, a top White House aide continued to deride a new book about the Trump administration while simultaneously downplaying Steve Bannon's role in it and defending President Trump's tweets about his intelligence.

"Now I have to put up with a Fake Book, written by a totally discredited author", Trump said.

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon has expressed regret over comments attributed to him in a controversial new book about US Prsident Donald Trump's White House.

Mr Wolff's book, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, paints an unflattering portrait of Mr Trump, claiming the President's staff - and even his family members - regard him as "like a child". In the book, Bannon makes a number of scathing critiques against Trump and his inner circle, including calling a meeting between Trump campaign officials with a Russian lawyer in Trump Tower during the presidential campaign "treasonous" and "unpatriotic".

When Tapper tried to get him back on track to talk about the meeting, Miller replied, 'I have no knowledge of anything to do with that meeting'.

"Jake Tapper of Fake News CNN just got destroyed in his interview with Stephen Miller of the Trump Administration", the president tweeted.

Throughout the interview, Miller repeatedly praised Trump's political prowess, knocking the "so-called political geniuses in Washington" who didn't predict the populist Republican's ascent.

Miller focused on edifying Trump's "political genius", until Tapper ultimately cut him off for refusing to cooperate.

Corey Lewandowski, Mr. Trump's former campaign manager, said Mr. Bannon had clearly crossed a line.

Tapper countered by saying, 'I think the viewers right now can ascertain who is being hysterical'.

"It happens to be a true statement", Miller said of the characterization. He urged his followers to "watch the hatred and unfairness of this CNN flunky!"

"I regret that my delay in responding to the inaccurate reporting regarding Don Jr has diverted attention from the president's historical accomplishments in the first year of his presidency", Bannon said.

"Actually, throughout my life, my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart", the president said in a tweet.

A US TV journalist cut-off one of Donald Trump's White House advisers during a spiky interview, accusing the aide of "wasting enough of my viewers' time" after attacking the TV network he was appearing on.

Senior White House Advisor Stephen Miller waits to go on the air in the White House Briefing Room on February 12, 2017. "You're being obsequious, you're being a factotum in order to please [Trump]".
