Serena to skip Oz Open

The 23-time Grand Slam victor defeated her sister Venus in last year's Australian Open 6-4 6-4 and had a second consecutive title in her sights when the tournament started later this month. This was her 23rd Grand Slam singles title, surpassing Steffi Graf's Open Era record of 22.

She added: "The memory of last year's Open is one that I will carry with me, and Olympia and I look forward to coming back again".

There were encouraging signs for Williams as she fell to Jelena Ostapenko in a tight exhibition match in Abu Dhabi last week, though the news today that she will not be in action ahead of the Australian Open suggests she may not be ready for a full return to tour.

Serena Williams has withdrawn from the Australian Open saying she is not quite in the right head space to compete at the highest level.

Williams is the latest big name to withdraw from the year's opening Grand Slam, which will be played from January 15 to 28, with Britain's Andy Murray (hip) and Japan's Kei Nishikori (wrist) having already said they would not compete. "I appreciate the support and understanding of my fans and everyone at the Australian Open", Serena concluded her statement.

Williams might be "super close" but she doesn't yet think she is in championship-winning shape.

The 36-year-old only gave birth to a baby girl in September and was unable to practice for two months afterwards due to medical reasons.

Serb Novak Djokovic, a six-time Australian Open champion, may also miss out with an elbow injury.

"It was never going to be good enough for her to just compete".
