Jimmy Iovine's days at Apple are apparently numbered.

Apple's music streaming service unofficial head, Jimmy Iovine, may step down from his post in August of this year, according to a report from Billboard. In 1990, Iovine founded Interscope Records, which later joined Vivendi's Universal Music Group that is still among the three biggest music labels to this day.

Hits Daily Double reported Iovine's impending departure earlier Thursday. Iovine has reportedly been a key figure behind initiatives like exclusive content on Apple Music, like special albums or video series like Carpool Karaoke. Time will tell what his next endeavor will may be, but it's completely understandable if the industry veteran takes his Beats bag and goes home. Iovine's expected departure is likely timed to his Apple shares fully vesting, the report said.

With Iovine at the helm, Apple Music rose to roughly 30 million paid users, becoming a well-known music service. In November 2015, Iovine publicly apologized for sexist comments.

The Bloomberg report says that Iovine's tendency to "trust his gut" has led to conflict within Apple. "Or complaining about boys, when they have their heart broken or whatever" and need music to match their moods.

Iovine and rapper Dr Dre first set up Beats to sell premium headphones, but eventually expanded into Beats Music, a subscription streaming service. "I could have chosen my words better, and I apologize". I'm 64 years old. There's just a problem here that needs some sort of solution, and I want to contribute to it. Goldman Sachs may think it's solved, but I don't.
