NBC makes Hoda Kotb 'Today' co-anchor after Lauer firing

Hoda Kotb Named 'Today' Co-Anchor, Replacing Matt Lauer

Hoda Kotb, who has filled in on NBC's Today show since Matt Lauer was sacked in November, has now officially replaced him.

NBC revealed Kotb will take over as Savannah Guthrie's co-host on the weekday program in an announcement Tuesday - a little over a month after Lauer was sacked by the network following an accusation of inappropriate sexual behavior.

Kotb replied, "I'm pinching myself!"

The pairing of two women is a departure from the typical man-and-woman morning show format.

Kotb has worked as a broadcast journalist since 1986, when she started her career as a news assistant in Egypt for CBS News, according to Variety. With an audience dominated by women in an era where news of badly behaving men is frequent, the Guthrie-Kotb pairing may be particularly timely.

The transition from Lauer to Kotb has also been a leadership moment for Guthrie, who became a co-host of "Today" in 2012.

"We are kicking off the year right, because Hoda is officially the co-anchor of 'Today, '" Ms. Guthrie said, sitting next to Ms. Kotb.

Kotb, in turn, joked that "we should send some medics to Alexandria, Virginia, where my mom has likely fainted after hearing the opening of that show". Megyn Kelly hosts the show's third hour.

"Hoda has seamlessly stepped into the co-anchor role alongside Savannah, and the two have quickly hit the ground running", NBC News chairman Andy Lack said in a memo to staff on Tuesday.

Hoda Kotb, who took some time off in 2017 to welcome her adopted daughter Hayley Lee, first joined NBC News back in 1998 as a Dateline correspondent, having built a career as one of New Orleans' most recognizable anchors and reporters.

"I think they looked at it and said, 'Why would you change this?" And considering Today's ratings have been rising in the month after Lauer's exit, it probably wasn't hard to come to the decision that Kotb was an easy choice for the long haul.

Lauer responded the day after he was terminated by sharing his own statement, which said, "There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions".
