Bill to replace Medical Council to benefit profession

As part of the stir, doctors belonging to the Indian Medical Association in all hospitals would go on a dawn-to-dusk 12-hour strike, IMA State Prsident E K Ummer said in a statement here. Modern medicine doctors are opposing the draft NMC Bill 2017 that was approved by the Centre last week.

The National Medical Commission Bill was tabled in Parliament on Friday.

The medicos went on a protest march from Power House Chhak to Raj Bhawan Square holding banners and placards.

However, Apollo Hospital and Kalinga Hospital here haven't joined the strike, sources said.

"Unscientific mixing of systems and empowering of other practitioners through bridge courses will only pave the way for substandard doctors and substandard medical practice".

Clause 49 of the Bill calls for a joint sitting of the National Medical Commission, the Central Council of Homoeopathy and the Central Council of Indian Medicine at least once a year "to enhance the interface between homoeopathy, Indian Systems of Medicine and modern systems of medicine". According to it, the 15% seats of the private medical colleges will be decided by the management of fees.

IMA called on Indian doctors and nurses to suspend routine services for 12 hours on Tuesday to protest against a bill that seeks to replace the Medical Council of India with a new body.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) says the Bill will "cripple" the functioning of medical professionals by making them completely answerable to the bureaucracy and non-medical administrators.

IMA has four demands - One elected representative in NMC from the Registered Medical Graduates of every state and no separate registration for AYUSH. "If passed, the bill allows for any private medical college to raise its undergraduate and post graduate seats on its own", said Shah.
