It was revealed today that Southampton have agreed a fee with Liverpool for the Dutch centre-back.

Van Dijk joins Liverpool on a long-term deal and is reported to be earning £180,000 per week.

Indeed, the Merseyside outfit were forced to issue an apology to Southampton about their pursuit of the 26-year-old after the Saints threatened to report their Premier League rivals for an alleged tapping up.

Liverpool FC opted against signing an alternative to Van Dijk in the summer but former Republic of Ireland defender Breen has suggested two defenders that Klopp could target next month.

The Reds icon, 39, told Sky Sports: 'I think there is a dearth of top-class centre-backs throughout world football hence why so many clubs wanted him and the transfer fee is so high, ' said Carragher.

"I can't wait to pull on the famous red shirt for the first time in front of the Kop".

"I will always be indebted to the club for giving me the opportunity to play in the Premier League and despite a hard last few months I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Saints and have made friends for life at the club".

After a summer transfer window saga of vast annoyance and frustration for fans, management and Southampton's Virgil van Dijk himself, there finally seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you for everything!

A statement on the club's website read, "Liverpool Football Club can confirm they have reached an agreement with Southampton for the transfer of Virgil van Dijk". New blood is also on the agenda of manager Mauricio Pellegrino, who expressed his desire to bring in new faces after another abject 5-2 loss away at Tottenham.

An official announcement from both clubs has been made with the deal to be concluded on January 1.
