VIDEO: Number of CHP arrests increased by nearly 300 this year during Christmas weekend
California Highway Patrol Officer Andrew Camilleri died in a crash on southbound I-880 in Hayward on Christmas Eve, authorities said.
Assistant Chief Ernest Sanchez said the driver was traveling at a high speed when he slammed into the back of a CHP SUV parked on the right shoulder.
A second officer in the vehicle, Jonathan Velasquez, was treated at a hospital and released.
The crash was reported at 12:00 a.m. on southbound 880 just north of Highway 92, according to CHP.
Officials from the CHP Golden Gate confirmed the "tragic line of duty death" via Twitter on Christmas morning. The officers were stopped as part of their efforts to patrol the highway, which involves using tools such as radar, Sanchez said.
He was identified as 33-year-old Officer Andrew Camilleri Sr., according to Gov.
When released from the hospital, CHP says they have enough evidence to charge the driver with "very serious felony charges".
"Today, we lost not only a hero, but a son, a brother, a husband and a father to a senseless act and an irresponsible decision", said Capt. Tim Pearson, who commands the CHP's Hayward area office.
The California Highway Patrol says one of its officers died when a auto he was riding in was hit on a San Francisco Bay Area highway.
"Anne and I are profoundly disheartened to learn of the terrible loss of Officer Camilleri, who kicked the bucket yesterday while attempting to guard our groups".
"We join his family, friends and the entire California Highway Patrol in mourning his death and in honoring his sacrifice", Brown said in a statement. He is a 22-year-old man from Hayward and has not been identified at this time.
