Trump officials demand Mueller return thousands of emails

β€œIt is an honor to join you today and to stand with the incredible men and women of law enforcement,” said President Donald J. Trump at the 270th session of the FBI National Academy

But a lawyer for the Trump transition on Saturday sent a letter to two Congressional committees arguing that the materials were acquired in a way that was "unlawful".

The transition sources said they were surprised about the emails because they have been in touch with Mueller's team and have cooperated.

In addition to the emails, CNN reported, Mueller's team was also able to secure access to "transition laptops, cell phones and at least one iPad" without a subpoena. He said the agreement was laid out in June before a lawyer at GSA, Richard Beckler, a Trump appointee, who has since died.

A lawyer for TFA, who spoke on background because he was not authorized to speak to media, told NPR it found out on December 13 that GSA officials turned over the emails to the Special Counsel in September.

In a statement Saturday, Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform committee, dismissed the transition's arguments that GSA shouldn't have turned over the records to Mueller.

The letter added that a warrant should have been obtained for such materials, and said it violated the Presidential Transition Act.

This dispute over the lawful obtaining of this batch of emails is the latest in a series of ongoing attacks, particularly from conservatives, on the Department of Justice investigation looking into what role Russian Federation played in interfering in the 2016 presidential election.

Two administration officials meanwhile Sunday sought to downplay speculation that Trump was preparing to fire Mueller, who was appointed after Trump abruptly fired then Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, who was leading an agency probe into the Russian Federation affair.

Mnuchin's comments come a day after White House special counsel Ty Cobb told CNN in a statement that there are no plans to fire Mueller. But he has apparently caught Michael Flynn in a lie about his lobbying activities and may have former Trump campaign manager Steve Bannon on money laundering crimes he committed before he even knew the president.

"As the White House has consistently said for months, there is no consideration of firing the special counsel", Mr. Cobb said. Joe Manchin, D-W.V., a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee that is conducting its own investigation, called Mueller "beyond reproach" and claimed there are no members of his committee who believe there's a better person to take on the job of special counsel.

The seven-page letter, obtained by Axios, says: "We understand that the Special Counsel's Office has subsequently made extensive use of the materials it obtained from the GSA, including materials that are susceptible to privilege claims".

The Trump administration has pledged its cooperation with Mueller so far.
