Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam evacuated due to suspicious situation

Dutch police opened fire after a man threatened to use a knife at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.

Schiphol airport is one of Europe's top five busiest air hubs, handling a record 63.6 million passengers in 2016, up from 58 million in 2015.

A spokesman for the airport said the main plaza was evacuated and part of it is still closed off, but that the areas after check-in were operating as normal.

There were no reports of other injuries.

The situation is now safe, the Marechaussee police service said, and the suspect had been detained and removed from the scene.

Shocked travelers fled when the man, who has not been identified, began threatening crowds with his knife.

Officers at Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands shot the man in the leg and arrested him before transporting him to hospital. "He was injured and has been taken into custody". Trains were briefly ordered not to stop at the airport's underground station.

There are no further details about the suspect or his motives as yet.

But the airport tweeted later that the plaza was "reopened to the public again".

"The circumstances are telling us that it has nothing to do with terrorism", police spokesman Stan Verberkt said.

A video purporting to show the man being carried away on a stretcher has emerged on social media. Air traffic was unaffected.
