Israeli defense chief calls for Arab boycott after protests

The Trump administration argues that any future peace deal is likely to place Israel's capital in Jerusalem, and old policies need to be abandoned to revive the moribund peace process.

Israel maintains that all of Jerusalem is its capital.

In Cairo, the head of Egypt's largest Christian church announced he would not meet US Vice President Mike Pence when he visits Cairo on December 20.

In Gaza, mourners vented their anger at the funerals of two people killed during clashes at the border fence on Friday and the two Hamas militants killed early on Saturday.

Amid attacks in Europe on Jews following the United States' recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe condemned anti-Semitism "that always tries to justify itself with new pretext", and which he said has deep roots in France.

"Our demand is that policymakers in the United States review the decision and defy it", said Ezidyar.

However, Palestinian protests on Saturday were less intense than on the previous two days.

Egypt and Israel reached a US -sponsored peace treaty in 1979, after which Egypt started working on reviving the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and brokering intra-Palestinian reconciliation.

The city's status lies at the core of the Israeli-Palestinians conflict, and Trump's move was widely perceived as siding with Israel. The Israeli military said one protester was arrested. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the guard sustained a serious wound to his upper body and the attacker was apprehended. But, he added, peace between Israel and the Palestinians must be "negotiated on the basis of worldwide laws", and this makes France "worried about unilateral decisions of any country". Tens of thousands have also protested in Middle Eastern and Muslim countries.

The French President reaffirmed his "disapproval of Mr Trump's controversial move, saying the United States had "unilaterally recognised something that is not complying with the global law".

"I don't think we need more initiatives", Macron said, ruling out a new French mediation effort after holding a peace conference in Paris last January.

Erdogan has called for an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul on Wednesday to discuss the Jerusalem issue.
