Exclusive: Email shows effort to give Trump campaign WikiLeaks documents
4, 2016, giving them access to hacked WikiLeaks documents before they were publicly available.
"CNN's initial reporting of the date on an email sent to members of the Trump campaign about WikiLeaks documents, which was confirmed by two sources to CNN, was incorrect", the media giant said in a statement. The new email was first reported by CNN, which erroneously said the email was sent on September 4.
In a tweet Saturday, the president also criticized ABC News and reporter Brian Ross for a recent, incorrect story that Trump, as a candidate in the 2016 White House race, had illegally instructed campaign member Mike Flynn to make contact with Russian Federation, in an apparent attempt to help defeat Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. The Washington Postobtained a copy of the email in question, which CNN did not have, and reported it was sent on the afternoon of September 14 - 10 days after CNN had reported it was sent.
CNN incorrectly reported Friday that President Trump's campaign, including the candidate himself, his eldest son and top aides, received access to hacked Democratic National Committee emails on September 4, 2016, more than a week before the group WikiLeaks made the files public. On Sept 13, the day before the email, WikiLeaks had tweeted links to what the group said was 678.4 megabytes of DNC documents.
Trump Jr. told investigators he had no recollection of the email, but it was described to CNN by multiple sources and its existence was verified by Trump Jr.'s attorney. The panel's interview with Trump Jr. was supposed to be private. The story suggested that the individual may simply have been trying to flag the campaign to already public documents. But the source says DJT@Trumporg.com was not a valid email for Mr. Trump.
The top Democrat on the House intelligence committee said Friday his panel is looking into the email. It arrived about a week before WikiLeaks itself messaged Trump Jr. and began an exchange of direct messages on Twitter.
President Trump also attacked CNN for the wrongful coverage as he attended a rally in Pensacola, Florida, late Friday. The correction undercut the main thrust of CNN's story, which had been seized on by critics of President Trump as evidence of coordination between WikiLeaks and the Trump campaign.
