Colbert to Trump: Sorry you didn't get Time's 'Person of the Year' but 'at least some of your accusers did'

Time magazine names 'The Silence Breakers' behind #MeToo movement as Person of the Year

The Person of the Year announcement came on a USA television show that has itself been rocked by controversy NBC's Today show, which fired Matt Lauer over sexual assault and harassment claims just one week earlier.

In the wake of sexual misconduct revelations about Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and dozens of other prominent men in USA politics, media and entertainment, millions of people worldwide have shared their stories about being sexually harassed and assaulted. #MeToo was actually founded by activist Tarana Burke a decade ago to raise awareness about sexual violence.

Milano says she wasn't aware of Burke's earlier contribution when she made the tweet, and has since credited her.

"I think this is a watershed moment indeed, but I think we need to be clear that this is a moment for some people and not for all people", Burke told Kelly. "The image you see partially on the cover is of a woman we talked to, a hospital worker in the middle of the country who shared her story with us and some others but doesn't feel like she can come forward without threatening her livelihood".

"As women, we have to support each other and stand together and say, 'That's it".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Time's 2015 Person of the Year, said through a spokesman that this year's winners should be thanked for "having the courage to break the silence on sexual assaults and for the worldwide discussion that they have launched". "I deeply admire what many of them have done and I admire Time for honoring them", said Professor Joan Williams, founding director of Worklife Law at UC Hastings. "It's vital to me that we really set in some actionable things that we can do to continue this momentum". O'Reilly also denies any wrongdoing, but the news company severed its ties with the well-known commentator.

Trump, Person of the Year in 2016, tweeted recently that the magazine had told him he "probably" would be named again if he agreed to an interview and photo shoot.

The magazine said its shortlist for the 2017 Person of the Year, meant to recognize the "person or group of people who, for better or worse, wielded the most influence in the previous 12 months", also included North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, China's Xi Jinping and Donald Trump, who was chosen for the distinction last year following his election as USA president. Time has disputed his account.
