The White House has said reports asserting special counsel Robert Mueller subpoenaed financial records connected to the President "are completely false".

FRANKFURT/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A USA federal investigator probing alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election asked Deutsche Bank for data on accounts held by President Donald Trump and his family, a person close to the matter said on Tuesday, but Trump's lawyer denied any such subpoena had been issued.

President Donald Trump's personal lawyer John Dowd disputed that account, saying he had been told by Deutsche Bank that no such subpoena had been issued.

"We have confirmed that the news reports that the special counsel had subpoenaed financial records relating to the president are false".

A US official with knowledge of Mueller's probe said one reason for the subpoenas was to find out whether Deutsche Bank may have sold some of Trump's mortgage or other loans to Russian state development bank VEB or other Russian banks that now are under USA and European Union sanctions. "We have confirmed this with the bank and other sources", Dowd wrote in a statment. A source close to the matter said that Germany's biggest bank had received a subpoena from Robert Mueller's team for documents related to its dealings with the US President and had already begun to provide them.

Earlier this year, Mr Trump said pursuing his personal finances would be a breach of Mr Mueller's role as special counsel.

Most interesting of all, though, is what Harding goes on to detail: Around the same time Deutsche Bank's private wealth division was granting these extraordinary loans to Trump, business in the the bank's new Moscow branch was booming, thanks to the fact that it owned basically all of the business of Vneshtorgbank, or VTB - the Kremlin bank.

Deutsche Bank for months has rebuffed calls by Democratic lawmakers to provide more transparency over the roughly $300 million Trump owed to the bank for his real estate dealings prior to becoming president.

As Mueller's investigation unfolds, Trump has gone on the offensive. And the other line is Deutsche New York's extraordinary lending to Trump.

The $300 million includes a $170 million loan Trump took out to complete a hotel in Washington, two mortgages against his Trump National Doral Miami resort, and a loan against his tower in Chicago.

"I think that's a violation", Trump told the paper.

Deutsche Bank is not the only Trump-related business interest that is attracting the attention of investigators.

AFP reported late Tuesday that the subpoena sought information about Paul Manafort, the former Trump campaign official who was indicted in October.

Deutsche Bank countersued and the two sides eventually settled.
