HOW THEY VOTED: Most NY reps oppose expanding concealed carry gun rights

Nancy Pelosi: GOP Using National Reciprocity to Arm 'Violent Criminals'

Following mass shootings, House GOP votes to expand gun rights

Cuomo's comments came at a Manhattan news conference on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2017.

The House approved the bill, 231-198, largely along party lines. If the bill -known as the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act- becomes federal law, it will contradict existing state laws and would increase the number of legally carried guns in the state.

In a tweet sent last night, Governor Andrew Cuomo blasted the measure, saying that it would allow people convicted of violent misdemeanors out-of-state to carry hidden weapons into NY. "Only the NRA could propose something so ill-considered, unsafe and vile". He also urged New Yorkers to Tweet their displeasure toward GOP lawmakers, although the list included Long Island's Pete King and Staten Island's Dan Donovan, two Republicans who voted against the measure.

Opponents, mostly Democrats, said the bill could endanger public safety by overriding state laws that place strict limits on guns.

While the bill would seem to undermine the authority of each state, supporters argue that the Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution should afford concealed carry permits the same nationwide recognition as driver's licenses.

The claim that gun ownership stops crime is common in the US and that belief drives laws that make it easy to own and keep firearms. What's more, NY is one of only a handful of states that don't honor hide carry permits from any other states.

In a statement, Stefanik said that 2nd amendment rights "don't disappear when we cross state lines". "The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act will protect the rights of law-abiding gun owners and allow those qualified to carry a concealed firearm to do so in any state that allows it".

"New York City's well-recognized success in the continued decrease in shootings and murder is in no small part a result of effective control of guns on our streets", said NYPD Commissioner James P. O'Neill.

"Just days after the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history, the NRA is engaging their allies in Congress to push through a unsafe national concealed carry reciprocity law, which begs the question: how low can you go?" This country has the highest rate of gun ownership in the developed world.

The passage of the bill is a startling development after recent mass shootings that have rocked the nation and sparked calls for tightening, rather than loosening, gun regulations.
