Australia's Prime Minster signals support for amendments protecting religious freedom in same-sex marriage bill

Same-sex marriage will now be legal across Australia after the country's Parliament voted to allow it.

However, before the final reading of the bill, there was a disagreement with a number of members of parliament dividing on the topic.

"I don't want to say too much about John because he was gay and it was something he had a lot of struggles [with]", Ms Henderson told the Parliament.

Following a national postal survey that indicated overwhelming approval for marriage equality, lawmakers road this momentum to draft a multilateral, cross-party bill to legalize same-sex marriage.

"What a day. What a day for love, for equality, for respect", said Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

One of those who voted against the legislation, Queensland MP Keith Pitt, said he did not support the Bill because "I believe it does not adequately address the concerns of many in my electorate around religious freedoms, parental choice and the right for parents to raise their children as they see fit".

"This is a day for every Australian".

The law will likely come into effect in about a month, with the first wedding expected about a month later.

The House of Representatives passed the bill to change the definition of marriage from exclusively between a man and a man to "a union of two people".

Forster was joined in the public gallery by her partner, Virginia Edwards.

"It's time that that occur and I'm proud that it will occur", Mr Bowen said.

"We've voted today for equality, for love, it's time for more marriages, more commitment, more love, more respect", he continued.

The house spent the day voting on amendments to the bill, none of which passed (otherwise it would have gone back to the Senate).

Fewer than five of 150 MPs voted against the law same-sex marriage.

Nearly 80 per cent of eligible voters took part in the poll, and almost 62pc of the 12.7 million people who participated chose "yes" on their ballots.
