Chad Morris Reportedly to Be Named Arkansas Head Coach After 3 Years at SMU

Report Chad Morris likely to be hired at Arkansas

According to reports from ESPN, SMU head football coach Chad Morris has reached an agreement to take the same position with the University of Arkansas.

Morris spent three years as SMU's head coach, compiling an overall record of 14-22. The former Wisconsin head coach was signed through the 2020 season and will be paid an $11.8 million buyout.

The Texas native was a longtime high school coach in the state before beginning his collegiate career as the offensive coordinator at Tulsa in 2010.

Morris emerged as Arkansas' pick to replace Bret Bielema after Auburn's Gus Malzahn turned down the Hogs last weekend.

But like many teams that run hurry-up offenses, SMU's defense has been among college football's worst. Morris addresses Arkansas media Thursday for the first time.

Arkansas will formally introduce Morris on Thursday.

Steinmetz, approving the coaching hire as chancellor and heading the search hiring Yurachek as vice chancellor/direct of athletics, said of Morris in the press release: "I am confident that he is the right coach to lead us back to competing for SEC and national titles".

He replaces Bret Bielema, who was sacked after compiling a 29-34 record in five seasons - including 11-29 in the Southeastern Conference.

SMU went 1-11 the year before Morris was hired. SMU improved to 5-7 previous year, including a 38-16 win over No. 11 Houston.
