Cathay Pacific reports sighting of North Korea's missile test last week

Cathay Pacific crews are warned to look out for North Korean MISSILES after crew spot last test launch re-enter atmosphere near passenger jet flying from US to Hong Kong

An airplane crew flying over Japan saw North Korea's missile as it plunged back through the atmosphere last week, their airline said, as South Korea and the USA kicked off their largest ever joint air exercise.

A Japanese daily reported Tuesday that Japan will overhaul its missile intercept system starting next year to cope with advancements in North Korea's weapons technology such as faster-descending missiles launched at steeper trajectories.

A Cathay Pacific flight crew reportedly witnessed North Korea's latest missile test last Wednesday, the airline announced today.

At the time, US Defense Department spokesman Jeff Davis warned the intercontinental ballistic missile North Korea tested in July "flew through busy airspace used by commercial airliners".

Despite their planes' close proximity to these tests, Cathay Pacific is not planning on following Singapore Airlines' lead and changing its routes any time soon.

The Cathay Pacific flight took off from San Francisco and was bound for Hong Kong.

"Though the flight was far from the event location, the crew advised Japan ATC (air traffic control), according to procedure", the spokeswoman said, adding that flight operations had remained normal and was not affected, the Morning Post stated. Mr. Trump did not give any specifics on plans to combat the North Korean threat however, the USA moved a squadron of the military's F-22 stealth fighters to South Korea to begin combat exercises following the ICBM launch.

But analysts note the missile would require a re-entry vehicle that could withstand the heat and pressure of descent to deliver an intact nuclear warhead to the ground.

Wednesday's missile test reached the highest altitude ever recorded by a North Korean missile and the state-run Korean Central News Agency claims it's capable of reaching the U.S.

Regardless of whether or not the test failed on re-entry, the newest missile represents a technological breakthrough for the regime. "It's a research and development effort on their part to continue building ballistic missiles that could threaten everywhere in the world".

"Singapore Airlines is aware of the reports on the sighting of the North Korean missiles and is closely monitoring the situation", a spokesperson told Channel NewsAsia.

According to Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), that is a comment that needs to be taken seriously. "The president is not going to allow North Korea to have a nuclear weapon in their hands that can hit America", Graham told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on November 29.
