Asus Novago Windows 10 S laptop promises 20 hour+ battery life

Microsoft shows off Qualcomm ARM-based 'Always Connected' laptops from HP and Asus with Qualcomm Snapdragon 835-based devices promising instant-on with 20-hour battery life but will only run stripped-down version of Windows 10

Windows 10 on ARM is a reboot of Microsoft's earlier attempts to marry mobile processors with full laptop experiences.

CEO of Asus, Jerry Shen, took to the stage at the Qualcomm Tech Summit 2017 now underway in Hawaii to announce the world's first Gigabit LTE laptop, the Asus NovaGo. The machine will come with Windows 10 S pre-installed and will only run applications from Microsoft's Windows Store. The companies announced all-new Windows on ARM PCs, including HP's Envy x2 and ASUS's NovaGo. The Envy x2 will also support an active stylus that is Windows Ink certified for activities such as note-taking and illustration.

It is therefore somewhat surprising that both HP and Asus's devices will ship running Windows 10S.

At just 1.54 pounds, the HP Envy x2, which is the company's latest Surface clone, is lighter even than the 12-inch MacBook (2016), which weighs a mere 2 pounds. Qualcomm boasts battery life of up to 25 hours, plus instant power on and performance that is on par with an Intel computer.

Inside, the new ASUS NovaGo rocks the Snapdragon 835 (an 8-core CPU) on the 10nm process, up to 256GB of UFS2.0 storage and up to 8GB of RAM. To see how all of that works, we'll have to spend more time with these machines. Qualcomm is pairing the 845 with its X20 LTE modem, which enables more and better LTE-Advanced technologies as part of the unending search for better mobile signal.

Qualcomm set its sights on the Windows market late previous year when it announced that its Snapdragon 835 SoC processor would find its way into Asus, HP, and Lenovo Windows 10 devices featuring "Always On" connectivity.

Microsoft has not said when the devices will be available for purchase or released pricing details for the PCs, which run an "optimized" version of Office 365.

This 2-in-1 Windows laptop is the first such device powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 chipset, which offers up to Gigabit LTE connectivity thanks to its super-charged built-in modem. We'll be checking out the new ASUS laptop later today, so stay tuned for our hands-on impressions to find out if this is a device worth your time.
