Ballerinas leaping to the strains of Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker" helped launch Christmas at the White House, featuring a traditional decor that Melania Trump chose for her family's first holiday season in the White House. "If I become president, I guarantee we're going to be saying "Merry Christmas" at every store", he told the crowd. "@WhiteHouse is ready to celebrate!" The first lady unveiled the decorations at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on Monday, while welcoming children of military families to the residence.

Ringing in the holidays for the first time from Washington, President Donald Trump lit the National Christmas Tree Thursday evening, wishing the country "a Merry Christmas" - as he vowed to do during his campaign.

Former US President Ulysses S. Grant signed legislation marking Christmas as a national holiday.

The White House Christmas Party kicks off at 2 p.m. Friday. According to trump, the phrase "Happy holidays" negates the Christian essence of Christmas.

New this year are wreaths hanging from the exterior of every window.

Among the Christmas standards is an 18-foot (about 5.5-meter) fir tree in its traditional spot in the Blue Room, decorated with ornaments bearing the seals of every state and US territory.

Meanwhile, the annual Nativity scene is also on display at the White House.

Mrs. Trump's signature Christmas includes 71 wreaths, 53 Christmas trees, more than 18,000 lights, more than 12,000 ornaments, more than 3,100 yards (about 2800 meters) of ribbon and more than 1,000 feet (300 meters) of garland, the White House said.

One Twitter user pointed out that the dimly lit hallway lined with dead branches painted white looks like the ideal spot to tape a "Stranger Things" scene.
