4.1 Magnitude Earthquake Rumbles DC Area

Channel 6 Action News in Philadelphia reported that the 4:47 p.m. temblor's epicenter was located about six miles east-northeast of Dover, Del., according to the United States Geological Service (USGS), which initially measured it at 5.1 on the Richter scale but quickly revised that number. Residents in New York City and as far south as northern Virginia reported feeling the quake.

There have been no immediate reports of damage or injury.

The National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) reported a 4.1 magnitude earthquake on Thursday that briefly shook the region and to some went unnoticed all together. "Anyone sustaining serious damage of an emergency nature to a building or home should call their local 911 center to report it".

The station also writes that Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the USGS, says there is potential for aftershocks.

The tremors were produced by an natural disaster of a preliminary magnitude of 4.4 centered about ten miles from Dover, Del. It was hard to immediately predict if there would be aftershocks, she said.


FOX 5 viewers have reported feeling the natural disaster in the District, Maryland, including Prince George's County and Montgomery County, and in Virginia, including Prince William County and Fairfax County.

Hundreds of people said they felt it.

DE 105.9's Rob Petree hit the streets of Dover for reaction from residents on what they experienced during the quake, which one man said was deafening.
