They said coffee drinking is also associated with lower risk of some cancers, diabetes, liver disease and dementia.

Drinking more than three cups a day was not associated with any risk of harm - however the benefits were found to be less pronounced. Drinking more than four cups a day during pregnancy increases risks of low birth weight, pre-term birth and stillbirth, the review says.

The British Medical Journal review, published Tuesday by the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom, examined 201 studies of health effects of coffee intake. As such, we can't yet definitively say that drinking coffee is an effective means of prevention for, say, cirrhosis or cardiovascular disease.

The researchers found people who drank more than three cups a day did not tend to see any additional benefits, and other studies have shown people who drink much more than this start to do themselves harm.

Contrasted and non-coffee consumers, the individuals who drank around some coffee daily seemed to diminish their danger of getting heart issues or passing on from them.

"Factors, for example, age, regardless of whether individuals smoked or not and how much exercise they took could all have had an impact", he said.

Most of the evidence, however, is from observational studies, which can only find probable associations but can't prove cause and effect.

But he does think that coffee seems to carry legitimate health benefits; after all, this is just the latest in a number of recent reviews concluding that coffee can reduce certain disease risks.

Though the group will soon begin their next phase to study the effect coffee has on the liver, Poole added coffee enthusiasts should still "try to make it as healthy as possible" and steer clear of the sugar.

"There is an adjust of dangers in life, and the advantages of moderate utilization of coffee appear to exceed the dangers", he said.

Here's some good news for coffee lovers who are more used to hearing the negatives of their caffeine habit more than the positives. And - get this - the optimum amount is three or four cups a day.

"We simply do not know", Guallar wrote, continuing, "Coffee drinking is a complex behavior determined by cultural norms and associated with multiple socioeconomic, lifestyle, dietary, and health behaviors".

However, it's worth noting that drinking a lot of coffee can also be detrimental to your health.
