Pakistan hasn't changed policy of shielding terrorists: India on Hafiz Saeed release

'India dictating terms to Pakistan' claims Jamaaat ud Dawa

Hafiz Saeed 'designated global terrorist', US reminds Pakistan

He has been under detention since January this year.

He has been deemed as the alleged mastermind of 2008 attacks on the Indian financial hub of Mumbai that killed 166 people.

India has repeatedly asked Pakistan to re-investigate the Mumbai terror attack case and also demanded trial of Saeed and Lashkar-e-Taiba operations commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi in the light of evidence it had provided to Islamabad.

The Lahore High Court's justice review body rejected a government request to renew his detention for another 90 days Wednesday.

India considers Saeed one of its most wanted terrorists because of his involvement in the Mumbai attack, as well as a 2006 Mumbai train bombing and a 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Saeed's release confirmed once again the lack of seriousness by the Pakistan government in bringing to justice perpetrators of terrorism, including individuals and entities designated by the UN. It also appears to be an attempt by the Pakistani system to mainstream proscribed terrorists.

I will gather the people from across the country for the cause of Kashmir. If the USA was earnest, it had the leverage with Pakistan to have the terrorist brought to book.

The U.S. has also made several overtures to India for closer ties.

Radical cleric Hafiz Saeed was released on Friday after less than year under house arrest.

"He is free, we are happy".

A USA official said Washington was "deeply concerned" about the release.

The court said the government had failed to provide sufficient evidence to justify the extension on the grounds that Saeed's release would jeopardize public safety.

Pakistan has been detaining and freeing Saeed off and on since the attack and he and four of his aides were put under house arrest in Lahore in January.

The review board had earlier allowed a 30-day extension to Saeed's detention, which is set to expire in the last week of this month.

"It's because of Kashmir that India is after me, but all her efforts have been in vain and Allah has set me free".

Saeed had been under house arrest for the past 10 months since January but was set free after the Pakistan government chose to not keep in custody him further in links with any case against him.

"Hafiz Saeed was under house arrest on baseless allegations and jail officials came to his home last night and told him that he is now free", he said.

The US has offered a US$ 10 million bounty for Saaed, who has been declared a global terrorist by the United Nations.
