Tesla unveils its electric Semi truck at last
18 November 2017, 12:51 | Gretchen Simon
Tesla’s new electric semi-truck
Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled the company's new fully electricsemi truck concept on Thursday night. The new Roadster - a revamp of the original Tesla roadster launched in 2008 - can travel 620 miles on a single charge and has a top speed of 250 miles an hour.
Investors prodded Tesla's shares 2% higher in early trade in NY, shrugging off worries it was over-stretching itself with the new futuristic trucks and pricey sports auto launched in a glitzy event in California yesterday.
The Semi truck going into production in 2019 will boast 500 miles of range, a battery and motors that will last 1 million miles and cheaper total operating costs than diesel models, Tesla's chief executive officer said.
Musk said Tesla plans a worldwide network of solar-powered "megachargers" that could get the trucks back up to 400 miles of range after charging for only 30 minutes.
In his presentation, Musk said the cost of operating an electric tractor-trailer would be $1.26 per mile, compared with $1.51 per mile in a diesel truck. The semi, which is set to start production in 2019, is accepting pre-orders for $5,000 apiece.
Some analysts fear the trucks will be an expensive distraction for the company, which has never posted an annual profit and is in self-described "manufacturing hell" related to the $35,000 Model 3 saloon. "It will actually automatically lane-keep as well".
We would be hard-pressed to find anyone that doesn't think they absolutely need to haveTesla's Next Gen Roadster after watching the video by Brooks.
The price tag on the semi truck is unknown for now.
And the new Roadster is fast.
Semi adds one more major project on the plate of Musk, who not only has several in the works at Tesla, but also runs aerospace company Space X, and The Boring Company, which is attempting to solve traffic woes by creating a high-speed transportation system featuring a series of tunnels.
That's because there still appear to be limitations for how far the Semi can go before being charged.
But even lower costs won't make trucking a sure bet for Tesla. "So far, that final element has eluded Tesla Motors, which makes it hard to see these vehicles as more than "what if" concept cars".
"The truck market, for a variety of reasons, is ripe for change, from electrification, self-driving and connected", she said. Regulations require commercial trucks to be sidelined if their windshields are cracked in a way that could affect the driver's view.
Daniel Sparks owns shares of Apple and Tesla. "A more appropriate target for the electric-vehicle maker would be the short-haul, or so-called last-mile delivery, which would benefit from regenerative braking, low noise and emission-free EV motoring".
