The HTC Vive Focus Doesn't Need A PC Or Mobile To Work
HTC unveiled its Vive Focus all-in-one VR headset in China today, with a bold design, a handheld controller and the ability to allow users six degrees of freedom as they explore virtual environments. At the moment, the device, which was initially teased at Google I/O 2017 in May, will be available exclusively in China.
HTC Vive will continue to focus on the Chinese market for the rest of the year, Wang said, as evidenced by the company's release of its Vive Wave VR open platform in Beijing on Tuesday alongside the Vive Focus. Google also has a standalone headset upcoming from its Daydream line, although now without the addition of an HTC offering.
Instead, the headset is powered by a program called the Vive Wave, which appears to serve as an operating system and content platform for developers to create games for the headset.
In contrast to the USA and other Western markets, HTC Vive has a more stable foothold in China, which explains why HTC is dumping its resources there.
In May, Google announced a new line of standalone devices running on its Daydream mobile VR ecosystem. It is basically Google's Daydream platform, but for the Chinese market. HTC also confirmed that over 100 developers are already working on content for the HTC Vive Focus. "No Daydream standalone from HTC, but we remain great partners", said Google VR and AR VP Clay Bavor in a tweet. In place of external motion sensors like the ones the Vive and Oculus Rift use to track movement, the Vive Focusfeatures inside-out 6-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) "world-scale" tracking. The company hopes that Vive Wave will "bring together the highly fragmented mobile VR market" by make device optimisation and content creation easier for third-party developers.
