National Football League committee to discuss commissioner contract extension

Arthur Blank and Jerry Jones avoid each other before teams play
Through a letter from Cowboys counsel, Jones said Blank, who is the head of the NFL's compensation committee, misled the league's 32 owners about the details of the contract and that the owners are not unanimous on Goodell's extension, according to an ESPN report.
However, Goodell apparently believes he's doing a fine job and would like to continue doing it. ESPN reported Sunday morning that Goodell's contractual demands, made in early August, included a $50 million annual salary, the lifetime use of a private jet and lifetime insurance for his family.
"The reality is where Roger's contract would be is roughly the same amount of money that he is making now and with that being many specific performance clauses that would be voted on by numerous owners as each year comes up", he said.
Some NFL owners have been discussing the possibility of taking Jones out, and it comes from Article VIII of the NFL's Constitution & Bylaws, Florio reported, citing his source. The NFL denied this report, with Daniel Kaplan adding a quote from Blank that negotiations are moving forward as expected.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones threatened to serve legal papers if the NFL's competition committee approved a contract extension for Commissioner Roger Goodell. Cohen claims Blank told owners that the compensation committee would vote unanimously on Goodell's deal.
But amid plummeting viewer numbers and anger over anthem protests, some owners are now fighting to take matters back into their own hands.
Goodell has been commissioner of the NFL since 2006 and has been criticized on how he has handled controversies within the league. "NFL leadership has hurt Papa John's shareholders".
Goodell appears set to remain in his current role; forcing him out would require a two-thirds majority of owners, and Jones doesn't appear to have that kind of coalition mobilised. He's asking for a pay raise that will get him almost $50 million a year.
Jones has reportedly been unhappy with Goodell on several fronts, ranging from the six-game suspension for Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott over domestic violence allegations, to the league's unwillingness to force players to stand during the national anthem.
