Starcraft 2 will go free-to-play later this month

StarCraft II Wings of Liberty going free-to-play Details

This is great news for gamers who have been wanting to get into the game.

The original Wings of Liberty campaign.

The game was really divided into three episodes, each focusing on one of the three playable races (Human, Zerg, and Protoss - but you knew that), and only the first (the human one) will be available for free. According to Morhaime, players can participate in the full multiplayer ladder and in co-op game modes. Curious what that actually means?

Blizzard also announced a new co-op commander for the game, Han and Horner.

As a thank-you to the dedicated StarCraft II player community, those who already own any version of StarCraft II prior to October 31, 2017 will receive a special Eidolon Ghost skin and three portraits commemorating their founder's status in the game after StarCraft IIgoes free starting on November 14.

For players who already own Wings of Liberty, Blizzard will be offering the second expansion for StarCraft II, Heart of the Swarm, for free instead. Just be sure to log in sometime between November 8 and December 8 to claim it.

Included in the free package is access to the Wings of Liberty campaign, ranked ladder multiplayer, and all Co-Op Commanders. Once you achieve 10 First Wins of the Day in Unranked or Versus A.I., you'll gain access. Since Starcraft 2 is going to be given away, gamers will be able to play as many multiplayer matches with or against their friends as they want.

Other free additions include weekly mutations and Co-op commanders which are free to play until players reach level 5, while Raynor, Kerrigan, and Artanis are completely free without the level cap. Blizzard now feels that the time is right to make the game free-to-play.

Players will be able to download the Starcraft 2 multiplayer, and the single-player campaign of Wings of Liberty for free starting November 14.
