October 31 (Jiji Press)-Body parts of at least nine people have been discovered at an apartment in Zama, Kanagawa Prefecture, southwest of Tokyo, as police were searching for a missing woman, investigative sources said Tuesday.

Police found the bodies while searching for a 23-year-old woman, who had disappeared after exchanging Twitter messages with Shiraishi.

The body parts, which included severed heads, were found in cold-storage containers and tool boxes, some covered in cat litter.

The national broadcaster NHK and other media said police believed the bodies of eight women and one man are hidden in the apartment.

A bloodcurdling discovery was made in the apartment in Zama, a city in Kanagawa Prefecture, during an investigation into the disappearance of a young woman who went missing earlier in October.

After raiding the apartment, they reportedly discovered two heads inside a cool box at the entrance, before making the gruesome discovery of seven more. So far, Takahiro Shiraishi, 27, only faces a possible charge of abandoning bodies, but police are expected to also seek murder and charges of dismemberment.

"It's true that I tried to hide the bodies of the people I killed to destroy evidence", Shiraishi was quoted as saying by the police.

Police will conduct DNA tests to conclusively identify the victims, the website reported.

A man who lives on the same floor as the suspect said that noticed an "odd smell" when he walked past the apartment in August. The brother later learned of the suicide site after logging in using her name and password, and found she had been in touch with the suspect.

"I thought it smelled like sewage", one neighbor said.

The woman was seen on security camera footage walking with a man near the apartment, media reports said. He added: "It was something I never smelled before".

They said the missing woman contacted Shiraishi via Twitter in late September, seeking a partner for a suicide pact and saying she was afraid to die alone.
