In the past three days, the companies have been unable to get past differences over valuation, according to a person close to T-Mobile parent Deutsche Telekom, who asked not to be identified discussing private information.
It will diminish SoftBank's intended penetration of the important United States of America market, a strategy that includes a US$50bn investment. Representatives from SoftBank and T-Mobile could not be immediately reached for comment.
This wouldn't be the first time that a Sprint and T-Mobile deal falls through.

The rumored T-Mobile Sprint merger, which is just about old enough to vote, has reportedly been called off. T-Mobile fell by as much as 4%. Wireless data prices have been falling.
The combination of major carriers - seen as all but inevitable earlier this month - could have been problematic from a regulatory point of view, not to mention the job losses and impact on rates for US consumers and businesses, but the ability of both to go it alone has been in doubt for some time.
