Garcia in action during the match

Even though her campaign ended in disappointment, Halep will still finish the year as world number one if Pliskova does not lift the trophy tomorrow. "Okay, why not", she said with a smile.

Things looked bleak for France's Garcia when she failed to register a single game in the opening set of her final round-robin contest but she then found her range to run out a 0-6 6-3 7-5 victor in Singapore. "For me, it was the last match of the season and I knew this, and I just was trying to get the win".

"I had nothing to lose, and I was playing for my fans and for the people who were supporting me during all this week", Svitolina said after her win over Halep.

Garcia only just sneaked into the season-ending tournament and feels it may well have aided her progress.

The 26-year-old said: "Of course, I did everything I could and I wanted to win it, but it just didn't happen".

The Romanian has now failed to progress beyond the group stage in each of the last three years after Svitolina's victory sent Caroline Garcia through as Red Group victor followed by Caroline Wozniacki.

"Everything went so fast for me, so I'm very stressed to be here, but now I enjoy it and it's the best moment". It was the pair's second consecutive marathon following Svitolina's victory earlier this month in Beijing.

It was a stellar comeback from Garcia, who blew two chances to win the first set tie break. It will be very interesting for me if I make it through.

"I just felt 100 percent that the court is not for me and I can not finish a point", the Romanian said.

One player staged a great escape in what was arguably the best match of the tournament so far.

More significantly, Garcia dug herself out of trouble when 3-5 down in the deciding set, then fought off three break points for a crucial 6-5 hold before eventually breaking Wozniacki for the win.

A disappointed Svitolina said it was a "terrible feeling" to have lost after being in a commanding position. I will not be the aggressive player on court. My game was completely off.
