Volkswagen teases a return to Pikes Peak with new EV racer

VW teases EV racer for next year's Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

Volkswagen is hoping to make a big noise quietly on the world's highest major auto race, with a one-off, all-electric racer set to tackle next year's Pike's Peak hillclimb.

The last time Volkswagen fielded a factory entry at the Pikes Peak hillclimb was in 1987 with a wacky twin-engined Golf hatchback.

After the "dieselgate" scandal, in order to promote a greener image, Volkswagen removed itself from most top-level motorsport competition, including ending its WRC campaign. Dr. Welsch is the member of VW's board responsible for development. "It poses an enormous challenge and is therefore perfectly suited to proving the capabilities of upcoming technologies". "Our electric race auto will be equipped with an innovative battery and drive technology". The fastest time on record up the mountain was set by Sébastien Loeb in a Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak racer running the unlimited class back in 2013. "Our team is literally electrified about taking on this incredible challenge", Smeets continued. Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is 12.4 miles long, with a almost 5,000-foot climb to top out at a maximum elevation of over 14,000 feet above sea level. "It is high time for a rematch", Smeets continued.

The race has been held each year since 1916 near Colorado Springs, Colorado and the course is 12.4 miles long and has 156 turns.

The record VW are gunning for will be to beat the 8 minute, 57.118 second time set by Rhys Millen in his e0 PP100 past year. "The extreme stress test on Pikes Peak will give us important findings that will benefit future development, and it will showcase our products and their technologies". VW is using the project as more of a branding exercise to show that it has what it takes to compete in the electric segment.
