'We Cannot Be Distracted' From 'Saving Lives,' San Juan Mayor Says

Donald Trump

Trump claimed that the Puerto Rican officials want "everything to be done for them", but alleged that federal workers on-site are doing a "fantastic job".

Last night, Cruz wore a "Help Us We Are Dying" shirt while being was interviewed by Cooper.

"For some members of the class, the cause hit close to home", "It was harrowing to not know for about two or three days whether they were okay, I think that was the hardest from my end", said Vanelis Rivera.

He has pledged to spare no effort to help Puerto Rico recover from Maria's aftermath, and tweeted that military personnel and first responders have done "an wonderful job", despite having "no electric, roads, phones etc".

FEMA said in a news release Saturday that urban search-and-rescue teams, working alongside local law enforcement, have scoured the island and rescued 843 people.

A North Carolina congressman is criticizing President Donald Trump's Twitter comments about the mayor of Puerto Rico's largest city, San Juan, which has been devastated.

Long said the storms that struck Puerto Rico - Irma and Maria - greatly magnified the challenge for relief workers by damaging or wiping out some 3,200 roads or bridges.

Since Hurricane Maria's landfall, FEMA delivered more than 1.5 million meals and 1.1 million litres of water to the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, as of September 25th.

On September 29, the U.S. government received criticism from the mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulín Cruz, who pointed out that the federal relief effort provided after the natural disasters would be useless if the logistics issue was not solved.

Although Trump's tweets drew a measured response from Cruz herself on Saturday, they stirred a hornet's nest of criticism on social media.

Trump, along with First Lady Melania Trump, is set to visit the island on Tuesday.

The White House has said more than 10,000 federal workers have been sent to the USA territory to aid the recovery.

It's been more than a week since Hurricane Maria swept through Puerto Rico.

"My Administration, Governor @RicardoRossello, and many others are working together to help the people of Puerto Rico in every way ..."

"A natural disaster that's become a humanitarian disaster is no time for politics or grievances", said USCM Vice President Mayor Steve Benjamin (Columbia, SC). When the relief trucks rolled into town, residents like Manolo Morales were desperate for food and water. He also blasted Cruz for "poor leadership" and said she had been "told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump".

Appearing on television on Sunday, Cruz explained that "there's only one goal, and it's saving lives", adding that all she did "was ask for help".
