The remaining 283 claimed no gang affiliation but were arrested on either criminal or administrative charges.

Foreign nationals were arrested during the week of February 6, 2017, during a targeted enforcement operation conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) aimed at immigration fugitives, re-entrants and at-large criminal aliens.

The operation led to 43 arrests in Houston - slightly higher than last year - and 164 arrests in greater Corpus Christi, up from just 68 last year.

Homan added that "efforts to dismantle gangs are much more effective in areas where partnership with local law enforcement is strongest".

According to ICE, immigration officials and law enforcement have now arrested more than 7,300 MS-13 members since the onset of "Operation Community Shield" in 2005. Of the 1,378 arrested, 933 were US citizens and 445 were foreign nationals from more than two dozen countries.

Twenty-one of the offenders were arrested on murder-related charges, seven were arrested for rape and sex assault charges, and three for assaults on law enforcement officers. ICE said it worked with San Antonio police to arrest Gilbert Vasquez III, an alleged associate of the Tango Orejon Gang, on April 5. "Because the gangs do have a specific organizational structure", said McElroy. Of the arrests made in the Baltimore area, 14 were criminal arrests and 21 were arrests for immigration violations.

All members of gangs that Homan calls the biggest threat to America's communities.

Three of those arrested nationwide had obtained temporary reprieves from deportation under the Obama administration's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which offered protection to illegal immigrants brought here as children.

It was the largest round-up in the history of the Homeland Security Investigations, netting known members and affiliates from the Bloods, Crips, MS-13, SureƱos and other gangs. Authorities arrested ten unaccompanied minors as well, including nine confirmed gang members.

Authorities seized 238 firearms and large quantities of drugs, including almost 50 pounds of cocaine and 34 pounds of methamphetamine.
